Fish leather is a sustainable, durable, water resistant material crafted from the tanned skins of fish repurposed from the fishing industry's byproducts. Each piece of fish leather features unique textures and natural patterns.  Though thinner than traditional leathers, fish leather is incredibly strong thanks to its distinctive crisscross fibre structure. This eco-friendly material combines durability with striking aesthetics.  

Fish leather begins as fish skin, carefully cleaned, cured, and tanned like animal hides to transform it into durable, flexible, and water-resistant leather, perfect for Blicq’s bags and accessories. 

A byproduct of the food industry, fish skin plays a vital role in reducing waste and supporting circular economies by repurposing what would otherwise be discarded. This sustainable practice minimizes landfill waste, maximizes the use of resources already harvested, and reduces reliance on traditional leathers with higher environmental footprints.

At Blicq, we use premium cork fabric, also known as cork leather, valued for its soft, smooth and supple feel, much like traditional leather. This eco-friendly material is sustainably harvested from the renewable bark of cork oak trees in Portugal, without harming the trees. It is then shipped directly to our Vancouver studio, helping us maintain a minimal environmental footprint while supporting responsible sourcing.

Cork is sustainably harvested from the bark of cork oak trees in Mediterranean regions every 9–12 years without harming the tree. After harvesting, the cork is naturally dried, boiled to soften and purify it, then flattened for use. Cork is lightweight, elastic, water-resistant, and eco-friendly making it an ideal material for Blicq products. We pair cork fabric with a cruelty-free, vegan backing that is durable and washable. Simply wipe clean with soap and water to keep your cork Blicq accessories looking their best.
